Greening your business can do more than just improve your environmental credentials, and it could be just what you need to keep the best talent on board.
Announcing a new partnership with outdoors retailer Kathmandu, the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) explained how staff and consumers alike are interested in how sustainable companies are.
As a result, the group suggested it could pay dividends to invest in sustainable design and practices within a retail organisation, or indeed any other type of company.
Chief executive of the GBCA Romilly Madew said retailers such as Kathmandu are leading the way and will soon start to reap the rewards from being greener in their approach to business.
"Now is the time for retailers to embrace change and reposition themselves for the 'new normal'," she commented.
"Kathmandu is seizing the first-mover advantage by recognising that sustainability is an opportunity to cement customer relationships and attract and retain staff that demand more pleasant, productive and healthy workplaces."
There are many ways in which companies can give their sustainability a boost – creating recycling options, implementing cycle to work schemes and minimising energy use are just some of them.
However, for any initiative to be a success, it is essential that you get your staff on board. They are ultimately the ones who are going to be most affected, so it pays to give them a role in the decision making process.
Carrying out employee surveys is a great way to gauge interest – you never know, they might even come up with some green schemes of their own!
Being prepared to listen to ideas could be the key to success in your organisation as you make steps towards a more sustainable future.
